new spot, surfboard fishing 120411

Next to the Marines, at Surf Beach, skirted my way past the track and gave a salute.  I'm glad the Marines are going back to the water, maybe they will catch more fish.  See you guys on the beach, or in the water.  You are not the only ones who likes guns.

Birds were going crazy out there past the breakers, and I could waste no time scoping out a new spot.  I just got my gear on and went for it.  A few big sets rolled in but I got over the lip, parked next to the flock of pelicans, sea gulls, and cormorants and started casting.  Bam!....a nice fat sand bass.  Next, a 20 inch halibut gave me a whirl, and I landed her as I got pummeled on a set.  She was a beauty, and fat.  Fast and professional, I removed the hook and measured her, and sent her back to the sea.

I stayed within a quarter mile, 1000 yards past the surfers, but could not reach the Bull Kelp beds.  Got tangled up a few times on the Egregia algae.  Long, thin, hairy, but resilient, and strong, this kelp has a dense trunk that will not let go of lures.  I make a lot of racket in the water trying to free my lures, but sometimes, I just cut the line and forget about it; a Great White Shark might get curious and come by to investigate.
